Challenges Tab

The challenge list, groups and unlock rules, the challenge detail screen, hints, answer inputs, and submission feedback.

The Challenges tab is where teams find, open, and complete challenges. It combines a map preview, filters, and the grouped challenge list; tapping a challenge opens its detail screen.

The challenge list

  • Map preview — a 200px map strip at the top (Apple Maps on iOS, Google Maps on Android) with a pin per challenge and stacked pins for multi-step stacks, plus an expand button that opens a fullscreen map. The map is hidden entirely in quiz mode (indoor events). See Map & Starting Challenges.
  • Legend — a row of colored dots for Completed / Available / Locked.
  • Filters — sticky tabs: All, Available, Completed, Locked.
  • Refresh — the list refreshes itself about every 30 seconds, so newly unlocked challenges appear without a manual pull.

Groups and unlocking

Challenges are organized into collapsible group cards. Groups auto-expand when they unlock and auto-collapse when completed. A locked group shows why it's locked:

  • "Available from start"
  • Complete "{name}" to unlock — finish a specific challenge first
  • Complete "{name}" group to unlock — finish a whole group first
  • Sequential groups show "Complete challenges in order"

Challenges that aren't in any group appear under an "Other Challenges" header.

Challenge cards and statuses

Every challenge is locked, available, or completed. Locked cards are dimmed and not tappable, with the note "Complete previous challenges to unlock" — or, when gated by collectibles, Collect {n} {Name} to unlock (e.g. "Collect 3 Lobsters to unlock").

Cards carry small chips for context: the challenge type, "Timed", "Step 2 of 3" (for stacks), "Hint used", "Access code", and "Pending review".

Empty states: "No Challenges Yet" — "Challenges will appear here once the hunt begins." A filter with no matches shows "No Matching Challenges".

The challenge detail screen

Every challenge type shares the same frame: a dark header with a back chevron, the challenge name, its type (e.g. "Riddle Challenge"), and — for timed challenges — a live stopwatch. The body shows:

  • Clue — the challenge's clue as rich text, with an audio player when the organizer attached audio.
  • Difficulty badge and a {points} pts chip.
  • Speed bonus line — when the organizer configured speed bonuses, e.g. Speed bonus: 1st +N · 2nd +N, advertising extra points for the first teams to finish.
  • Hints — a hint button labeled Need a hint? (-{cost} pts) (or "Free hint available!" when the hint costs nothing). Tapping it opens a confirmation modal; once confirmed, the hint appears in an amber "Hint" box and the cost is deducted from the points this challenge awards.

Gates before the clue

Two kinds of gate can replace the clue and answer form until the team gets past them, in this order:

  1. Access code — an "Access Code Required" prompt with an "Enter code" input, an "Unlock" button, and a "Scan QR code" option. A wrong code shakes the modal with "That access code is incorrect."; the right one shows an unlocked confirmation with "Continue".
  2. Activation — GPS-proximity, QR, or beacon activation, covered in Map & Starting Challenges.

Answering

How the answer is entered depends on the challenge's answer type:

  • Text (riddles, counting, exploration, search, observation, finale): a multiline "Your Answer" box with "Submit Answer".
  • Fill in the blank: a single-line "Fill in the blank" box.
  • True / False: two tappable buttons.
  • Multiple choice: a tappable list of the organizer's choices ("Select your answer").
  • Photo: "Photo Evidence""Take Photo" or "Choose Photo". The app asks for camera/photo permissions and offers "Open Settings" if they were denied; the photo uploads before submitting ("Uploading…").
  • Video: "Video Evidence""Record Video" or "Choose Video", then "Submit Video". Recording is capped at 60 seconds at 720p, and files over 50MB are rejected with "That video is too large — videos must be under 50MB. Try a shorter recording."
  • Puzzle: a reference image pinned in the header plus an interactive grid puzzle to solve.
  • Minigames: five built-in games (slot machine, memory match, guess the word, guess the song, related words) played right on the challenge screen — winning submits automatically, and losing lets the team try again for free.
  • Facilitator-supervised (roadblocks): no answer form at all — the screen shows "Find the facilitator" with the organizer's instructions and a "Waiting for facilitator confirmation" pill. A facilitator marks the challenge complete in person.

For the full rules, scoring, and setup of each type, see Challenge Types.

Submission feedback

A confetti reward modal: "Challenge Complete!" / "You earned" with the animated points (using the event's branded points label). If a speed bonus applied, the breakdown reads {base} + {bonus} speed bonus — {rank} team to finish!. Tap "Continue" to move on. If the challenge awards a collectible, its award animation plays right after — teammates on other devices see it too.

Once completed, the challenge shows a "Challenge Completed!" box with "You earned {earnedPoints} points" (and "Completed in {time}" for timed challenges) and a "Back to Challenges" button.

Retries

There is no attempt limit for text and choice answers — teams can keep trying until they get it right. Minigames also allow unlimited free retries. A team can resubmit until it has one correct submission for a challenge; after that, it's complete.

When submissions are blocked

Submissions only go through while the event is active. Otherwise the app blocks the submit button with a status message:

  • "Event paused — submissions are disabled…"
  • "This event has ended…"
  • "Event has not started yet…"
  • "Event has not been published yet…"
  • "Submissions are not currently allowed."

(The event's welcome challenge is exempt so onboarding always works.) A live freeze artifact effect targeting the team also blocks submissions until it expires — see Inventory.
