Event Challenges & Groups
Building an event's challenge structure — the Challenges tab, the challenge editor sections, groups and unlock conditions, the library picker, access codes, and stacks.
An event's game content lives on its Challenges tab: the challenges themselves, organized into groups that control when things unlock.
The event Challenges tab
The header reads "Challenges (N total, M groups)" with a List/Map view toggle and — while the event is still editable — three buttons: Add Challenges (pick from the library), New Challenge (author one in place), and Add Group.
- Empty state: "Let's build this hunt" with a 3-step list and the buttons Add Challenges / Create a Group First.
- Starter group: the tab auto-creates a first group named "Main" so you always have somewhere to put challenges.
- Live lock: once the event is active, an amber banner appears — "This event is
{status}. Groups and ordering are locked, but you can still edit challenge content." Structure edits (adding/removing/reordering challenges and groups) require draft or scheduled status; content edits stay open. See Creating & Configuring Events.
The challenge editor
Event challenges and library challenges share one editor. Sections appear in this order — note that Gameplay and Rewards only exist when editing a challenge inside an event (they're event-specific), and Rewards and Audio Voiceover appear only when editing an existing challenge:
| Section | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Challenge Details | Name, Type (Riddle, Counting, Exploration, Search, Observation, Photo, Video, Puzzle, Roadblock, the five minigames, Finale), Difficulty (Easy/Medium/Hard), Points, Visibility (library only), Answer Type (Text, Photo, Video, True / False, Multiple Choice, Fill in the Blank, Puzzle) |
| Content | Clue (rich text), Hint, Hint Cost ("Points deducted when a participant uses the hint (0 for free hints)"), and the answer editor, which changes shape with the answer type — a text Answer with Alternate Answers, True/False buttons, Answer Choices for multiple choice, or AI Validation Criteria for photo/video |
| Minigame Setup / Puzzle Setup | Only for minigame/puzzle types — a config panel on the left with a Live preview on the right (puzzle grid size, word lists, reel images, and so on) |
| Location | Zone, a map location picker, Latitude/Longitude; library challenges also pick a Greater Area; event challenges add Map Icon Color and Custom Map Icon overrides |
| Media | Challenge Image (4:3) and Challenge Video |
| Access Code | Code (with a Generate button; codes are case-insensitive), Prompt message ("Hint shown above the code input on mobile"), and an Access Code QR block — print it so players can scan to auto-fill the code |
| Gameplay (event only) | Activation mode (see Challenge Activation), Requires Facilitator + Facilitator Instructions, Max Completing Teams ("Challenge disappears after this many teams complete it. Leave empty for unlimited."), and Speed Bonus point tiers (1st Place, 2nd Place, … with Add Tier) |
| Rewards (event only, edit mode) | Collectible awards, collectible requirements, and artifact rewards attached to this challenge |
| Audio Voiceover (edit mode) | Generated narration of the clue |
Deep documentation of each challenge type's fields and player experience lives in the Challenge Types section — for example Photo challenges.
Groups & unlock conditions
Groups are the unit of pacing: they decide when a batch of challenges becomes playable.
Creating and editing a group
Add Group (or editing an existing one) opens the "Create Group" / "Edit Group" dialog:
- Name (e.g. "Starter Challenges") and Description
- Color (Blue / Green / Purple / Orange / Pink / Teal) and Icon
- Unlock Mode — All at Once (every challenge in the group is playable the moment the group unlocks) or Sequential (challenges must be completed in order)
Unlock conditions
Each group's unlock rule is set via Set Unlock Condition, choosing a Condition Type:
- Starter — unlocked from the moment the hunt starts.
- After Challenge — unlocks when a specific challenge is completed (Trigger Challenge select).
- After Group — unlocks when an entire group is finished (Trigger Group select).
At least one group (or starter challenge) must unlock at start, or the readiness check flags "no starter content" and blocks publishing.
The Welcome group
Events instantiated from a template get a special Welcome group: its first challenge auto-opens once per device the first time a player lands on their home screen (no back button — they complete it before entering the hunt), and it awards 0 points. It's the place for orientation content — rules, safety notes, an intro question. An event can have at most one welcome group.
Adding challenges from the library
Add Challenges opens the library picker — "Add challenges to {group}" — with a search box, a type filter (All types), and checkbox multi-select. Challenges already in the event show an Added badge. The footer counts your selection ("N selected") and confirms with Add N challenges.
Access codes and their QR
Any challenge can carry an access code — a lock the team must enter before seeing the clue. Codes are case-insensitive; the Prompt message is shown above the input on mobile ("Ask the bartender for the code…"). The Access Code QR block in the editor renders a printable QR that auto-fills the code when scanned. Note this is separate from QR activation, which is a different gate — see Challenge Activation.
Stacks
A stack is a set of challenges grouped into a single map location — a multi-step stop. On the player's map a stack renders as one pin, and its challenges show step chips like "Step 2 of 3". Stacks are managed on the event's Stacks tab; a stack can hold up to 20 challenges.
Locations are snapshotted
Event challenges snapshot their coordinates at event creation. When an event is built from a template, each challenge's location resolves through the hierarchy (template override, else the library challenge's location) and is then copied onto the event challenge — after that, editing the library challenge or the template does not move a live event's pins. Move a pin on the event's Map view (or edit Latitude/Longitude in the event challenge) to change it for that event only.
The full three-layer location hierarchy — library base, template override, event snapshot — is documented in Greater Areas & Locations.
