Challenge Types

Video

Players record a short video as evidence — max 60 seconds at 720p, under 50MB. AI validation judges a thumbnail frame; review holds work like photos.

Video challenges capture performance moments: a team chant, a dance on the plaza, a dramatic reading of the plaque. The team submits a short clip instead of a typed answer, and the same AI / facilitator-review pipeline as Photo decides when points land.

What players experience

The challenge screen shows the Clue, difficulty badge, {points} pts chip, and a "Video Evidence" section with "Record Video" and "Choose Video" buttons, plus a "Submit Video" action. Capture limits are enforced on the device:

  • Recording caps at 60 seconds at 720p.
  • Files over 50MB are rejected with: "That video is too large — videos must be under 50MB. Try a shorter recording."

The clip uploads before submission ("Uploading…"; failures show "Upload failed — check your connection and try again"). Feedback mirrors photo challenges: instant confetti "Challenge Complete!", or — with Review Before Points on — "Submitted for Review!" with "⏳ Points pending facilitator review" and an amber on-hold box, or "Not Quite!" with a retake on an AI reject. Facilitator rejections show the reason with a prompt to resubmit.

Scoring & answers

Video challenges use the Video answer type and follow the media validation pipeline:

  1. AI validation runs only when the challenge has AI Validation Criteria and the event's AI Photo Verdicts toggle is on. For video, the system extracts a thumbnail frame at the 1-second mark and sends that single frame to OpenAI's gpt-4o vision model with your criteria; the model is instructed to be "reasonably lenient". The verdict, confidence, and reasoning are stored and shown in the review drawer's AI verdict panel.
  2. Review Before Points holds the submission for a facilitator regardless of the AI verdict — the AI result becomes guidance in the review drawer. Approve awards the challenge points (or the Points to award override); reject awards 0.
  3. AI failure never loses a submission — it is queued as pending manual review ("AI validation failed, pending manual review").
  4. Neither enabled — every video is accepted automatically as correct.

Standard scoring applies on acceptance: Hint Cost deduction, Speed Bonus tiers (first non-staff finishers), Max Completing Teams, Double Down doubling.

AI sees one frame, not the whole clip

Validation judges a single frame captured at 1 second. Criteria about motion or sound ("the team sings the anthem") cannot be verified by AI — use Review Before Points and let a facilitator watch the clip. Write AI criteria around what's visible in the opening second.

Tips

  • Design for the first second. If the AI must validate, the identifying subject should be in frame from the start — a clip that pans to the landmark at 0:45 fails a 1-second-frame check.
  • Prefer Review Before Points for performance challenges. They're usually the highlight reel of the event; a human watching the queue (with keyboard A/R shortcuts) is fast and keeps the fun submissions from being auto-graded on a thumbnail.
  • Tell teams the limits in the clue — "under 60 seconds!" — so nobody records a three-minute epic that gets trimmed by the recorder or bounced by the 50MB cap.
